Form-Scaff's Temporary Works Design Service
Form-Scaff offers a professional Temporary Works Design service (Design element only) to customers who are hiring or buying equipment from us and guarantees that all designs are done by a suitably qualified Temporary Works Designer (Competent Person) and that it is backed up by the required calculations, details, and specifications.
Compliance & Responsibilities
Every country in which we operate in Sub-Saharan Africa has its own rules and regulations in terms of the design and use of temporary works and we are proud to state that we employ the right calibre of people and adhere to all the required regulations where possible.
The South African Construction Regulations 2014 (issued by the Department of Labour) has perhaps got the most detailed documentation and prescriptions around this very important subject:
It clearly defines the role and responsibilities of a formwork or scaffolding supplier – this is where we as Form-Scaff and Doka comes in.
It further also defines in precise detail the role of the Contractor (the user) of the temporary works equipment.
The SA Construction Regulations requires that a Contractor legally appoint a Temporary Works Designer (in writing) to Design, Inspect and Approve any erected temporary works structures on all projects - no matter the size.
Legislation further dictates that the appointed Designer must be deemed a “Competent Person” CR 6(2) who has the required temporary works knowledge, training, and experience and, where applicable, qualifications and must be familiar with the (OHS) Act and any other applicable regulations.
It further states that EVERY temporary works structure on a project must have its own calculations, drawings, and specified sequence of construction.
Each structure needs to be uniquely identifiable, and a single drawing cannot be used for multiple structures. Simply providing a drawing, sketch or schematic layout is not sufficient, and any drawing must include calculations, details, and specifications to make it a “Design”.
The contractor can therefore appoint Form-Scaff to fulfil the Design role of CR 12(1), but would still need to appoint someone else, either internally or externally, as the Competent Person to take responsibility for the Inspection and Approval roles.
Important! Failure to comply with the above SA Construction Regulations could result in a project being stopped, a fine being issued by the Department of Labour, or even imprisonment, should a collapse result in harm, injury or death.
Waco Engineering Services (WES) offers a full turnkey temporary works service to contractors, engineers, and clients.
